I am passing this on to you because it definitely works, and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives.

By following simple advice heard on the Dr. Phil show, you too can find inner peace. Dr. Phil proclaimed, "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never finished." So, I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of White Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, a bottle of Kahlua, a package of Oreos, the remainder of my old Prozac prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some Doritos and a box of chocolates. You have no idea how freaking good I feel.

As I have mentioned in Bells on a Starry Night in the post Groesbeek Canadain War Cemetery; I have no direct memories of World War II

Part of my connecting with the war has been by visiting various significant sights. I was fortunate to to see Arnhem and the John Frost Bridge this summer.

This evening The History Channel is re-showing Band Of Brothers The series followes Company E or "Easy Company" as they were known through their training landing at Normandy and then their experiences through Operation Market Garden.

Operation Market Garden was fought in and around Arnhem and Nijmegen.

For the men of Easy Company and all the soldiers who fought for our freedom

A simple no player game usually played on graph paper or on a checker board.

The rules are simple:

How does a community thank its fallen soldiers?

There is a 170 km stretch of highway between Trenton and Toronto Ontario that all of our fallen soldiers traverse.

More than 14,000 [as of August 23^rd there are 19136 Signatures] people have signed an electronic petition to officially rename that stretch of highway, where people gather on overpasses to wave flags, display placards of support, and salute the processions of hearses and limousines.

On Thursday, Ontario Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield said there were "no barriers to making this happen."

No news in good news....

I spent most of the evening with my sister's family...in the dark.

I usually see my sister's family, three nephews and a niece, about once a week. This week was no different.

I arrived at their house with all the lights off, no electricity, no hot meal.

We did manage of course, a quick shopping trip and we had salad, bagels, cheese and other cold yummies. No one complained, except the monkey boy; he's not quite a year old.

I didn't spend much time on the web, there are no links....ok...maybe 1.

Robbers snatch dog poo

A Chinese woman has told how robbers snatched a parcel of dog poo wrapped in newspaper out of her hand outside a bank.

Mrs Chen, of Laohekou city, was waiting in the bank to withdraw money when nature suddenly called for her dog.

"While I was waiting in the queue, my dog had to poo. So I asked for several pieces of newspaper to wrap the poo," she said.

After wrapping it, Chen left the bank, and was waiting to cross the street to throw the parcel into a rubbish bin when the robber struck.

"A motorcycle stopped swiftly before me, the man on the rear seat seized the package from me, and they sped away," she said.

Police are investigating the case while "laughing at the stupidity of the robbers", according to Chutian City Papers.

Gosh, sometimes I just have so much to say, I don't say anything.

That is the case of this blog; I spend so much time reading and responding/reacting to what I see on the web I don't know where to begin.

My TV is my computer; I have a TV tuner card and as I watch TV I look up (i.e. google) what I am hearing about. General web articles and sights, Wikipedia or whatever comes up.

I am going to start sharing these links and my thoughts about some of what I see.

I bit of holiday muzak caught my ear today, I don't remember what it was, but I was brought back to my childhood. For 15 minutes every day I was with friends; Friendly, Jerome and Rusty.

I wanted to visit him, try all 3 chairs, even share the bigger chair with my sister if I had to.

I was watching the news tonight, there was a story about a video being shown on some middle eastern tv stations. The video is called Suicidal Terror.

Godzilla didn't eat me

While my sister and family are away on vacation, I am responsible for the care and feeding of this beast. OK, not really a beast, he (or she) is about 12 inches long right now and can grow to about 20 inches.

Elephants Everywhere!!

I have a bit of a warped sense of humour; ask any of my friends, they'll confirm it!

I have always been a fan of elephant jokes. Why you ask. I have NO idea! I just like 'em.

The Colorado State Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen, and golfers to take extra precautions and be on the alert for bears while in the Dillon, Breckenridge, and Keystone area.

They advise people to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the bears unexpectedly.

They also advise you to carry pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch for signs of bear activity.

People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings.

Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear droppings have bells in them and smell like pepper spray.

Me, Music & My Nephew

My oldest nephew is 9 years old, he seems to have hit his teen years early. Teen age angst has come early; Green Day seems to be the cause; they are what he listens to, along with a slew of other groups aided by his father. Sometimes I just laugh at him and remind him that he IS only 9 and not to worry about what the world does or doesn't think about him. He just looks at me and goes on with his mood.

I am trying to get him and my other nephew, 7 years old, to listen to other music, although the little guy does listen to Crazy Frog and other music on that cd. I am trying to introduce them to world music. (have alook at www.putumayo.com) Its been a bit of a task to get them to even listen, nevermind like the music.

This past weekend I bought myself the Curious George soundtrack by Jack Johnson because I wanted 1 song; Upside Down. Well, my older nephew is a fan of jack Johnson too!! I finally found something we have in common without either of us forcing anything. Of course I made him a copy of the cd (don't tell anyone, ok) I am looking forward to listening to the cd while we read the lyrics together.

The cd is mostly easy for parents and children to listen to together.
Faced with the task of giving a voice to a central character that does not speak, Universal Pictures turned to Jack Johnson to craft songs that could provide a voice for Curious George.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but listening to and reading the lyrics give me the same impression.

Upside down seems to describe the world from the perspective of Crious George, the monkey, confused but sure he can do or try whatever he wants.

Things aren’t always just what they seem
What would it take to make the children we're around feel the same way? Feel that even though things are not always easy, thay can and should try whatever thay want.

I was having lunch today and reading one of the city's alternative weekly newspapers. I usually skim through most of the paper, but this caught my eye.
... an "expert" on a TV panel about teen sex who claimed that girls can get pregnant through anal sex...
...in Sex Ed, the teacher refers to sex as "Russian Roulette" because you will either "get pregnant or sick from it."...
..."two teens are touching each other and grinding bodies (with no penetration) and the girl gets some semen near her vagina and 'flash!' she's pregnant."...

"Balance?" inquired Michael, still confused.

God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth, "For example, Northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while Southern Europe is going to be poor; the Middle East over there will be a hot spot. Over there I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people," God continued, pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and arid while this one will be very cold and covered in ice."

The Archangel, impressed by Gods work, then pointed to a large land mass in the top corner and asked, "What's that one?"

"Ah," said God. "That's Canada, the most glorious place on Earth. There are beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, streams and an exquisite coastline. The people from Canada are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous and they're going to be found traveling the
world. They'll be extremely sociable, hardworking and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace."

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed; "What about balance, God? You said there would be BALANCE!"

God replied wisely. "Wait until you see the loud-mouth bastards I'm putting next to them...."

President George Bush was in the Oval Office wondering which country to invade next, when his telephone rang.

"Hallo, President Bush" a heavily accented voice said. " This is Archie, up 'ere at the Harp Seal Pub in Badger's Cove, Newfoundland, Canada ey? I am callin' to tells ya dat we are officially declaring war on you ey!"

"Well Archie," George replied, "This is indeed important news! How big is your army?"

Right now," said Archie, after a moments calculation "there is myself, me cousin Harold, me next-door-neighbor Mick, and the whole dart team from the pub. That makes eight!"

George paused. "I must tell you Archie, that I have one million men in my army waiting to move on my command."

" Holy jeez," said Archie. "I'll have ta call ya back!"

Sure enough, the next day, Archie called again. "Mr. Bush, the war is still on! We have managed to acquire some infantry equipment!"

" And what equipment would that be Archie?", George asked.

" Well sir, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and Harry's farm tractor."

President Bush sighed. "I must tell you Archie, that I have 16,000 tanks and 4,000 armoured personnel carriers. Also I've increased my army to one and a
half million since we last spoke."

" Lard T'underin' Jaysus, bye", said Archie, "I'll be getting back to ya"

Sure enough, Archie rang again the next day.
"President Bush, the war is still on! We have managed to git ourselves airborne! We up an' modified Harrigan's ultra-light wit a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, and four byes from the Legion have joined us as well!"

George was silent for a minute then cleared his throat. "I must tell you Archie that I have 10,000 bombers and 20,000 fighter planes. My military complex is surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites. And since we last
spoke, I've increased my army to TWO MILLION!"

" Jeysus, Mary and Joseph," said Archie,"I'll have ta call youse back."

Sure enough, Archie called again the next day.
"President Bush! I am sorry to have to tell you dat we have had to call off dis 'ere war."

" I'm sorry to hear that" said George. "Why the sudden change of heart?"

" Well, sir," said Archie, "we've all sat ourselves down and had a long chat over a bunch of pints, and come to realize dat dere's no way we can feed two million prisoners."

"My advice to Canada is stay as completely far away from U.S. drug law policy as possible," said David Soares, the district attorney for Albany County in the state of New York. I'm not a very good blogger, as you can tell by my infrequent entries.

Thats not really true, I just don't think about it as often as I should. I've also been a bit depressed lately; this is the week between the anniversaries of my parents deaths. I'm managing.

A couple of things have caught my attention; Greasemonkey and a record comapny, Putumayo World Music.

I'm using it to save Google and YouTube videos. Oh yeah, you're going to need he VLC media player

My other discovery is Putumayo World Music I had some gift certificates to use, I really didn't know what to get myself, then I saw the floor display, bright colours, and music!! (ok I sound like a kid...so what!)

There was a huge selection of world music CDs, I wanted something with a broad selection of music. Swing Around the World was my choice.

FIRST TESTIMONY: I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow and asked loudly, "How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?" I turned around and walked back out and never went back. My husband didn't say a word... he knew better.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST TESTIMONY: This had most of the state of Michigan laughing for 2 days and a very embarrassed female news anchor who will, in the future, likely think before she speaks. What happens when you predict snow but don't get any! We had a female news anchor that, the day after it was supposed to have snowed and did not, turned to the weatherman and asked: "So Bob, where's that 8 inches you promised me last night?" Not only did HE have to leave the set, but half the crew did too they were laughing so hard!

I am a computer technician at Dawson College a very big CEGEP or Jr College. I receive lots of printed publications and junk mail. I wanted a way of tracking how my address was getting around.

On all the forms I fill out there is a space labeled "Job Title" or "Position" Feeling a bit silly one day, I entered Computer Geek First Class Well..as you can imagine, I started to receive this particular publication with that on the address label. I had a good laugh.

It didn't take too long before I started to receive other mailings with the same information. Sometimes it amazes me that no one actually checks these things.

Hi Everyone!!

As some of you may be aware, I'm a computer technician (cough*geek*cough) at a really big Jr college. My life is somewhat controlled by the cycles of the school year, with one difference; I can take time off almost any time I want. This year I took my big trip in September. You can read more about that here: My trip to London. To continue, I also sometimes take time during the semester, maybe a week at the end of November. This year, because of other obligations, I wasn't able to take any time until now; the week between the holidays. I really needed the break!

Although work is not stressful; most of my days are pretty consistent, there are days when I feel like a human pinball; Some days I don't see my office.

During my time off my broadband router died, went belly up, crapped out, fell down-go boom...you get the idea. I needed a replacement. I setup a linux based firewall appliance, Smoothwall Express It will run on almost anything. I had an old P2 233 MHz with 256MB of ram, I needed a CD-ROM drive for the install and a floppy for backups. I was on my way!

It has been up and running for almost 3 weeks, not a wimper or a complaint for it. As with most Linux systems, it just runs. With the help of the Smoothwall Community Forums I added a couple of modifications that make the system even easier to use. I'm not sure if I'm more impressed with myself or the Smoothwall box sitting in the corner of my office. It is worth a look.

Another national election, what is the point?!?!?

Stephen Harper is just acting like my 8 year old nephew..."I can't have it MY way, so we're not going to play!"

We don't need or want an election right now, considering Paul Martin promised to call an election in the spring.

Stephen Harper is dangerous, a western redneck, conservative to the end.

I know that the Liberal party has not behaved itself very well over the past few years; The ad scandal is their biggest blunder. I doubt I will be voting for the Liberal party.

Frankly I don't care who is the Prime Minster of Canada, as long things stay on an even keel.

I know that I will NOT be voting for the conservative party.

Time will tell what happens.

During my recent trip to London, I drank lots of tea, my host drank lots of tea...In fact I think the British drink lots of tea!

The tea I had was called Yorkshire Gold; I never had it before and I thought I would never have it again. I didn't think it was worth shipping a box of tea across the pond (that's the ocean btw).

We have a small grocery store near work, they stock European products, nothing consistent, and from day to day you never really know what they will have. I had a wander to the tea & coffee section to see what I could see...tea and coffee obviously. What caught my eye was a familiar box, could it be? It was; Yorkshire Gold tea! I bought a box, the only box they had, unless I wanted loose tea, I didn't.

My Plan for now is to make myself a cup of tea and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at work!
(Or get my infinite improbability drive going and take another trip - but that's another story)

Two boys from western canada, Luke McAndless-Davis from New Westminster, BC and Matthew (no last name) from Calgary,have started a campaign to get Canada's 5 Billion dollars back from the United States. The money is from the softwood lumber dispute.

I have been feeling down all day today, I wasn't sure why 'till I spoke to my sister. She reminded me that today was my parents wedding anniversary. They would have been married almost 50 years.

Both my parents died within a year of each other; my dad March 25, 2004 and mom April 1, 2005.

The picture was taken about 6 month before my dad died, it was taken by a family friend.

I miss them very much.

After John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields was published in 1915 the poppy became a popular symbol for soldiers who died in battle.

Three years later an American, Moina Michael, was working in a New York City YMCA canteen when she started wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield.

During a 1920 visit to the United States a French woman, Madame Guerin, learned of the custom. On her return to France she decided to use handmade poppies to raise money for the destitute children in war-torn areas of the country. In November, 1921, the first poppies were distributed in Canada.

I was busy looking for something online tonight; nothing new there.

I am usually very careful about what I download and run on my system, and I have an up to date virus scanner that stops things from being downloaded. My little safety net.

In my hast to get something going, I downloaded a file and just ran it. I didn't really look at where it came from. POO!!!

It was a browser highjack. Not just any hijack but one that loaded with windows and kept adding things to my Hosts file. Needless to say, I was not pleased ant myself or at my problem.

Deep breath....Getting on the web was a bit of a problem, but I was able to locate a fix for the problem, after using my own knowledge and tools. This has happened at work and we've successful dealt with it. No luck, nothing was working. This was something new.

I was fortunate that someone else has had this problem and wrote a small application to clean it. This was my chance!! I hopped.

Download, run, reboot, error message, reboot again...Success!!

I'm back safe and sound.

So what have we learned?
Don't download files you aren't completely sure of.
Don't run files you aren't completely sure of.
Make sure your virus scanner is up to date.
Be familiar with a good internet search engine.

I was lent a cd by a co-worker. Chavez ravine by Ry Cooder. I had never heard of him or his music. I'll listen to anything once...maybe.

I gave this cd a listen, I liked it, it was similar to the smooth jazz I enjoy listening to and it wasn't hard on my ears.

Curious person that I am, I looked him up on the net and I looked for the cd too.

It seems that the cd is the music from an independent film about Chavez Ravine and Dodger Stadium in Los Angles. I was amazed at the politics and nastyness that were involved in getting Dodger Stadium built. Here is a llink to the cd and the music.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory today It was a treat for the eyes. It was more faithful to the Dahl book then the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, although I did enjoy the 1971 movie. The current movie is not a musical.

Most people know the story, Willie wonks opens his magical factory to 5 lucky children that find a golden ticket. Four of the five children are over taken by their own character flaw and are ejected from the factory. In the end Charlie gets the factory.

For me, the biggest theme in the film is "What Goes Around Comes Around" or Karma. The good guys do well, the bad guys don't do so well.

The "bad" children are either punished or rewarded in a way that fit their character

Veruca, Violet, Mike, and Augustus—receive punishments. Augustus, who overeats as a hobby, gets himself stuck in a chocolate pump that eventually flattens him out. Veruca, for her bratty behavior, is denied the squirrel that she desires. Furthermore, the other squirrels deem her a “bad nut” and send her down the garbage chute. Violet, unable to resist gum, chews herself into a giant blueberry. Mike, who is obsessed with television, is permanently altered by it. In all of these cases, the children undergo painful punishments that ultimately make them better people. As the good child, Charlie receives only rewards.

Friday Morning in the rain

Good Morning...NOT!

I suppose the fact that it's Friday makes it a good day. It feels like it's been raining for ever, I know it hasn't, just over a week ago it was as warm as a hot sunny day with temperatures in the 30's c.

I shouldn't really complain, rain is better than snow....you don't have to shovel rain.

I found some new music, the group is called Pink Martini

This is worse that buying a new car. I know what I want, I've even found the brands of some of my components. Its down to the details now.

Every time I think I know what I want, I look at the specs of similar products. They are mostly the same except for a detail...Not minor. How many expansion slots, 3? 4?

I could just go into a store and buy a system off the shelf...but then I couldn't call myself a geek...could I now?

What is the difference between the highest priced low end video card compared to lowest priced high end video card? I may never know!

sigh....This is going to take longer that I had hoped.

Don't ask me about a video card...all I know is i want 256 Mb ram on the card.

No Konica Minolta DCs for Canada: Digital Photography Review

I am not a happy photographer.

I have been a minolta (now Konica Minolta) fan for a long time. I have an old 35mm camera and lenses and a high end digital camera both Minolta.

Now I hear that Konica Minolta is pulling out of Canada. Who's idea was that. They haven't made any comment about a new distribution channel or where to purchase Konica Minolta products.

My next digital camera was going to be Konica Minolta latest SLR with at least one high end lens. Not any more. I will be looking at the Canon and Nikon digital SLRs

So much for company loyalty.

Ya know, I never really though of myself as a writer. Being dyslexic has always made reading and writing a real struggle, but after the positive comments about my other blog, I figure it may be a good thing.

I'll be posting interesting stuff, I hope.
